The Lotus Foundations Server viral video hits town...

After seeing the new viral video I have concluded that Lotus Foundations Server is either some kind of asteroid shield for buildings or a new antiperspirant that makes overweight middle-aged guys irresistible to hot young blondes (where was this product when I needed it?).

The video was OK as a comedy clip but I don't see how it's going to help spread the word about Foundations. I guess that's why I don't get the big bucks as a marketing mogul.

WTF!!!
I'd like to be nice about this but it's a completely useless and rotten piece of marketing. I hope nobody paid for this.

IBM... Wanna sell foundations.

1. Make a few videos showing various REAL Disasters... eg: Budget Blowout, A Sudden need to access documents in a new file format, a Server issue and even a mostly industrial company that suddenly realises that it's customers expect EMAIL and a web presence.

2. Get a single decent actor to come in an solve the lot with foundations...

eg: The morons you had on this clip can be the "morons"... not much acting required there...

Then have someone like David Tennant walk through the door with a foundations server under one arm (and a sonic screwdriver in the other hand).

Then... perhaps you'd have something viral.

Supposedly its getting lots of views, though it seems sort of fishy (IBM employees? Robots used to push up the view count?). On the other hand, MSFT got lots of play too in their short-lived Seinfeld/Gates series which they pulled (as they planned to along along:-). I sent that one around to friends mostly to make fun of the idiocy and condescension of MSFT. So it was definitely viral, but I don't think it helped their image in the slightest. The theory goes, any press is good press. But I think there is damage a silly, ill-conceived advert can do to the brand. IMHO anyway.

Graham, when you read the comments on yours and other blogs, you probably begin to understand why I rant about IBM marketing. They have donne this for years to us.

Christian,
I've been pushing Notes/Domino for almost twenty years so I know EXACTLY what you are talking about regarding the lack of IBM/Lotus marketing. I stay with the products because they are technically superior... not because I approve of the (lack of effective) marketing.
